  4. Never one to do things timidly, with Vulnicura Björk delivers a breakup album that isn't just sad -- it throws listeners into the total devastation of heartbreak. Starting with the album cover's wound/vulva imagery, she explores the tightly linked emotional and physical pain the end of a relationship brings with an intensity that has been missing from her music for too long.

"My throat was stuffed, my mouth sewn up, banned from making noise, I was not heard." "Quicksand" departs somewhat from the album's underlying mood with percussion and digital giant wasp buzzes/5().

  8. Unlike most of the previous songs on Vulnicura, which deal with the tumultuous dissolution of Björk’s relationship with Matthew Barney, “Mouth Mantra”, the eighth and penultimate song on the album, is about a three-week period after vocal surgery in which Björk wasn’t able to speak.
